Leisure Suit Larry is a graphic adventure game, with an adult theme. The goal of the game is to help the protagonist find love, or more explicitly, to get him laid. You guide Larry Laffer through the city of Lost Wages, visiting various locations looking for women, and the objects that may win their affections. Whenever Larry gets close to success, there's always a humorous twist that leaves Larry empty handed. It's these hilarious events that make the game so enjoyable.
The game was created in 1987 by Al Lowe (www.allowe.com) and Sierra Studios (www.sierra.com) and was a huge success. It was named the Best Adventure/Fantasy Role-Playing Game of 1987 by the Software Publishers Association, and promted the creation of a sequal. In the end, Sierra created 6 games in the Leisure Suit Larry series. NOTE: The series deliberately jumps from Leisure Suit Larry 3 to Leisure Suit Larry 5. This is becase Al Lowe guaranteed there would be no Leisure Suit Larry 4. The vga remake of Larry 1 in 1991 is seen by some to be the fourth game in the series, as it introduced use of the new interface that was also used in Larry 5 ("point-and-click"). Some people also include more recent games that feature Larry Lovage (Larry Laffer's nephew), these include Magna Cum Laude and Box Office Bust.
Leisure Suit Larry 8, tentatively titled Leisure Suit Larry 8: Lust in Space was in full development in 1998, when funding was cut. Shortly after Al Lowe left Sierra as Sierra's adventure games department was disbanded. Eventually in 2004, Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude was made, which features Larry Lovage (Larry Laffer's nephew). When the game was released, Al Lowe appeared to strongly state that the game was NOT Leisure Suit Larry 8. Considering that the game was a huge flop in comparision to the older titles, and alienated many of the larry fan-base, his stance was understandable. Eventually Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust was released in 2009 (another game featuring Larry Lovage), with was also poorly received.
In 2013, under the direction of Al Lowe, Leisure Suit Larry Reloaded was released. The game is an enhanced remake of the 1987 Sierra On-Line adventure game Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards. It is the second remake of this game, following the 1991 remake, which featured VGA graphics. Development for the game was crowdfunded via Kickstarter, and key donators were featured in the game.
At this point, there is little hope for another sequal. The game's traditional interface is now outdated (which was "type-as -you-go" and finally "point-and-click"). And in a market of 3D shooters and enormous role playing games, it appears that the classic adventure game has lost it's appeal with game producers.
